Lutron Derating Charts

About Ganging

Ganging is the mounting of two or more controls side-by-side in a series of connected wallboxes. Scored break-off fins along each side of the control’s mounting plate are designed to be removed to facilitate ganging in a single existing wallbox. Removal of the fins decreases the control’s ability to dissipate heat and thus reduces the current carrying capacity of the control.

If you are uncertain of your ability to correctly select or install Lutron or any other electrical products, you should consult with a qualified electrical contractor or technician before ordering or installing.

Ganging and Derating for Lutron Wallbox  Dimmers

Derating is the reduction of the maximum capacity (load) a dimmer can  reliably handle when the side sections (fins) are removed.

Vareo, Nova T*, Nova and Centurion dimmers may be ganged without removing the side sections - no derating required. Side sections can be removed to save space or have ganged units fit into existing wallboxes - derating required (side sections must be removed if using VWP Vareo wallplates for Vareo  wallplates for Vareo dimmers or tap switches).

Lumea2, Maestro, Diva, Skylark, Ariadni, Faedra, Glyder and Rotary dimmers must remove side sections to gang - derating required.

Athena dimmers have no removable side sections and derating is not required.

Planning a Multigang Installation

STEP 1

Determine if the side sections are to be removed or to remain intact (applicable to Vareo, NovaT*, Nova, Centurion).

Consider: width of application, load, number of wallboxes  required, product type and side section breakoff options.

Control Widths (for determining width of a ganged installation)

Note:

  • All Vareo models are considered "small" controls
  • For control sizes of Nova T* and Nova dimmers:
    • 600W and 1000W models are "small" controls
    • 1500W and 2000W models are "large" controls
  • For control sizes of Centurion and Athena dimmers:
    • 600W and 1000W models are "small" controls
    • 1500W and 2000W models are "large" controls
  • All Lumea2, Maestro, Diva, Ariadni, Faedra, Glyder and Rotary models are considered "small" controls

STEP 2

Use the capacity derating charts to determine maximum  permissible loads for each control in the installation if side sections will be removed.

STEP 3

Determine number of wallboxes required and plan control  placements in gang (see charts below):

Note:  When ganging an even number of small controls  with no side sections removed, use wallboxes with tapped ears as shown below. Do not use plastic rings or gangbox covers. Space an additional wallbox 3/4" apart  from the other wallbox(es). A 3/4" chase nipple is recommended as a spacer  between the wallboxes.

Example: Wallbox arrangement required for gang of 4 small controls, side sections intact:

Assembling The Controls:   When ganging any combination of small and large controls,  place a small control on one extreme end of the gang, and a large control at the  other end of the gang. Use center and offset mounting holes as  necessary.

Removing Inner Side Sections

When removing side sections, remove only inner side  sections. Do not remove side sections on outer ends of the gang.

Assembling the Controls

When ganging any combination of small and large controls,  place a small control on one extreme end of the gang and a large control at the other end of the gang. Use center and offset mounting holes as  necessary.
